Celebrating the International Day for Older Persons: HANU’s Role in Advocacy

Every year, the International Day for Older Persons (IDOP) serves as a platform to highlight the challenges faced by older persons and advocate for their rights. For HelpAge Advocacy Network Uganda (HANU), IDOP 2024 was a momentous occasion that showcased its commitment to creating a more inclusive society for older persons. This article delves into HANU’s activities during IDOP 2024 and the impact they continue to have on Uganda’s aging population.

A Day of Advocacy and Celebration

The IDOP 2024 celebrations took place in Masaka District, under the theme of promoting the dignity and well-being of older persons. The event was graced by notable figures, including the Vice President of Uganda, Rtd Maj Jessica Alupo, who officially launched HANU’s Strategic Plan 2024-2028. This strategic plan outlines a comprehensive approach to addressing the needs of older persons through advocacy, capacity building, and service delivery.

Key activities during the event included health camps that provided geriatric care, economic empowerment sessions introducing small business opportunities, and legal advocacy campaigns that raised awareness about the rights of older persons. These efforts reflect HANU’s holistic approach to tackling the multifaceted challenges faced by Uganda’s aging population.

Amplifying the Voices of Older Persons

One of the standout aspects of IDOP 2024 was HANU’s emphasis on amplifying the voices of older persons. Through storytelling and interactive sessions, participants shared their experiences, highlighting both their struggles and the resilience that defines them. These stories not only inspired action but also reinforced the importance of community-driven solutions.

HANU’s advocacy extended beyond the event itself. By collaborating with government agencies and other stakeholders, the organization continues to push for policy changes that ensure older persons are included in national development agendas. These efforts have led to tangible outcomes, such as improved access to healthcare services and the integration of geriatric care into local health systems.

Looking Ahead

The success of IDOP 2024 underscores the critical role HANU plays in advocating for older persons in Uganda. As the organization prepares for future initiatives, it remains committed to its vision of a society where aging is celebrated, and older persons are valued.

HANU invites everyone to be part of this journey. Whether through volunteering, donating, or raising awareness, every effort contributes to creating a brighter future for older persons. Together, we can ensure that aging is not seen as a burden but as a stage of life filled with dignity, purpose, and respect.
