Aging is an inevitable part of life, yet for many older persons in Uganda, it comes with unique challenges that demand urgent attention. From inadequate healthcare to economic insecurity and social exclusion, these issues require a coordinated approach to ensure older persons live with dignity and respect. Enter HelpAge Advocacy Network Uganda (HANU), a coalition that has risen to the occasion, championing the rights and well-being of older persons across the country. This article explores the incredible journey of HANU, its achievements, and the transformative vision it holds for Uganda’s aging population.
The Birth of HANU
HANU was established in 2023 following the closure of HelpAge International’s operations in Uganda. Recognizing the gap left behind, HANU emerged as a national umbrella organization, bringing together stakeholders to address the growing challenges faced by older persons. The coalition includes key organizations such as Health Nest Uganda (HENU), Grandmother’s Consortium (GC), and Reach One Touch One Ministries (ROTOM), all working collaboratively to provide support and advocacy.
The vision of HANU is clear: a Uganda where older persons enjoy their rights, live without discrimination, and receive the support they need to thrive. With this goal in mind, the organization focuses on policy advocacy, capacity building, and implementing programs that address critical needs such as healthcare access, economic empowerment, and social inclusion.
Milestones Achieved
In its inaugural year, HANU celebrated several key achievements. The launch of its Strategic Plan 2024-2028 during the International Day for Older Persons (IDOP) marked a pivotal moment. The plan emphasizes age-friendly policies, enhanced healthcare access, and economic empowerment, providing a roadmap for the organization’s efforts.
Another highlight was HANU’s involvement in advocacy campaigns, which successfully pushed for policy reforms like reducing the eligibility age for the Senior Citizens Grant. This achievement underscores the coalition’s commitment to ensuring older persons receive the recognition and support they deserve.
The Way Forward
Looking ahead, HANU aims to expand its reach and strengthen partnerships with government bodies, local organizations, and international donors. By fostering collaboration and mobilizing resources, HANU is determined to create sustainable solutions that transform the lives of older persons in Uganda.
HANU’s story is a testament to the power of unity and advocacy. As the organization continues its mission, it invites individuals, organizations, and communities to join in building a society where aging is celebrated and older persons are valued for their contributions.
